BUSINESS CONFIDENCE NEWS

Business confidence near eight-year low

Rebecca Howard
New Zealand's business confidence has continued to hover around an eight-year low in December as tailwinds provided by an overheated housing market and record levels of migration slow down.
A net 38 per cent of businesses were pessimistic about the year ahead in the ANZ Business Outlook, compared to 39 per cent in the prior survey.
The last survey saw confidence dropped to an eight-year low on political uncertainty after the new government took office.
However, a net 16 per cent of companies see their own activity expanding in the December survey, compared to 6.5 per cent in November.
The historical average is 28.
"The economy is doing the hard yards at the moment," ANZ Bank New Zealand chief economist Sharon Zollner said.
"Positive forces remain, but the turn in housing, flattening off in net migration and lack of capacity in the construction sector are all dampening near-term growth."
While she said the new government has "no doubt caused a degree of apprehension amongst businesses", she noted one headwind that does appear to be easing is difficulty of getting credit.
A net 25 per cent of businesses expect it to be tougher to get credit, versus 41 per cent in November.
"This may be one of the factors explaining the welcome, albeit modest bounce in the own activity measure," she said.
The survey also showed a net 3.2 per cent of firms expect profit to fall in the year ahead, compared to 13 per cent in November.
Employment intentions improved to 2.5 per cent from a net negative 2.7 per cent in the prior month but remain well off the July peak of 26 per cent.
Across the five sub-sectors, agriculture remained the least positive, though all were firmly negative about general business conditions.

AMAZON  news

Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN
) may capture nearly 25% of all consumer dollars spent online in the U.S. during this holiday season, according to Youssef Squali, senior analyst for the internet and media sector at SunTrust Robinson Humphrey, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.
As further evidence of Amazon's increasing dominance in retail, the consensus view among analysts is that the company's North American and International segments will record about $53.5 billion in net retail sales during the fourth quarter, 33% better than the same period last year, and more than 60% better than two years ago, per the Journal.
Amazon's stock is up 59% for the year-to-date through Tuesday, putting its market capitalization at $569 billion per Yahoo Finance. Amazon is not just a leader in retail, but also in a rapidly-growing segment of business services, cloud computing.
Largely due to this diversified business model, Amazon may be on track to reach a market cap of $1 trillion by the end of 2018. (For more, see also: Amazon May Soon Become Market's 'Trillion Dollar Bull.')

Soaring Cloud Revenues

Amazon's cloud computing division, called Amazon Web Services (AWS), is projected to record $17.3 billion of revenue in 2017, up 42% from the prior year, per the Journal. AWS is the clear market leader, and one recent study indicates that its share exceeds the combined shares of its next three biggest competitors, Microsoft Corp. (MSFT
), International Business Machines Corp. (IBM
IBM
International Business Machines Corp
153.55
+0.71%

), and Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL
GOOGL
Alphabet Inc
1,037.38
-2.44%

), the parent of Google.
While Microsoft is making strides to close the gap, currently growing its cloud revenues more than twice as fast, AWS is developing more value-added cloud services to keep ahead of the competition.

Bitcoin saw a massive, sudden spike just after it broke through a closely watched milestone Tuesday night.
The cryptocurrency traded at an all-time high of $10,831.75 just after 12:30 a.m. ET, according to industry site CoinDesk. That represented a more than 10 percent jump from its price around $9,830 just 24 hours earlier.
In fact, much of that incredible gain had come in just the last four hours after the cryptocurrency smashed through the $10,000 mark that many analysts had been hyping for months.
All told, it's been an exponential ascent from 6 cents seven years ago and less than $1,000 at the start of this year.
Since bitcoin's market capitalization is less than $200 billion, enthusiasts point out the digital currency could rise dramatically if it draws even a tiny fraction of the world's $200 trillion in traditional financial market assets.
More than 120 "cryptofunds" have launched, including some run by Wall Street veterans, according to financial research firm Autonomous Next. In another move towards establishing bitcoin's legitimacy as an asset class, the world's largest futures exchange, CME, is planning to launch bitcoin futures in the second week of December.
Former Fortress hedge fund manager Michael Novogratz predicted on CNBC's "Fast Money" in October that bitcoin would reach $10,000 in the next six to 10 months. As bitcoin rose above $9,700 Monday, Novogratz said in another "Fast Money" segment that bitcoin could "easily" be at $40,000 at the end of 2018.
Last Wednesday, Fundstrat's Tom Lee raised his mid-2018 price target for bitcoin to $11,500 from $6,000. That followed a similar upgrade last Monday by Standpoint Research's Ronnie Moas, who raised his 2018 price target for bitcoin to $14,000 from $11,000.
However, other market watchers remain highly critical of bitcoin. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon has called the digital currency a "fraud" and BlackRock CEO Larry Fink has said bitcoin is an "index of money laundering." Aswath Damodaran, a professor of corporate finance and valuation at New York University's Stern School of Business, has also noted that unless bitcoin can be used for ordinary transactions, "it could be just another fad."
U.S. dollar-bitcoin trading volume only makes up about 20 percent of the total, according to CryptoCompare. Japanese yen trading in bitcoin dominates at about 61 percent, while trading in South Korean won accounts for about 11 percent, according to CryptoCompare.
